Thanigai Malai Thirumalai graduated with gold medal in Civil Engineering from the University of Madras in 1986. He obtained his master’s degree in Structural Engineering in 1988. After a brief research experience at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, he joined the Bhaktivedanta Institute in 1989. He acquired MA in philosophy from the University of Mumbai in 2001. He received his PhD from the University of Mumbai in 2007 for his dissertation on the concept of consciousness in modern science and the Vedanta.
