Professor Subhash  C. Mishra

Dean of Academic Affairs &

Professor  of Mechanical Engineering

IIT Guwahati, India

Prof. Subhash C. Mishra did BSc (Engineering) in Mechanical Engineering from BIT Sindri, Dhanbad in 1989. He obtained MTech and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1992 and 1997, respectively. In December 1996, he joined IIT Guwahati as a Senior Lecturer. He became Assistant Professor in April 1997, Associate Professor in May 2000 and since October 2004, he is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Since March 2006, he is the Dean of Academic Affairs of IIT Guwahati.

At IIT Guwahati, while remaining active in administration and research, Prof. Mishra has been involved in the setting up of labs and developing course curriculum.  He is a man of heat transfer with specialization in thermal radiation. Apart from his main research in the area of radiative transfer, currently his research involves porous media combustion for cheap and clean combustion, use of transient radiative transfer analysis for defect/disease diagnosis and bio-diesel as an alternative fuel.

Prof. Mishra has more than 120 research publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences. He has guided more than 50 students. Currently, 12 students including 6 PhD students are working under his supervision.

Prof. Mishra is a recipient of the prestigious research fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.   He is the reviewer of 15 journals in the area of heat transfer.  He has organized a short-term course on Renewable Energy Systems in 2001, an International Symposium on Recent Trends in Heat and Mass Transfer in 2002 and a Winter Academy (an Indo-German Workshop) in 2003 at IIT Guwahati and has been the coordinating professor of Winter Academies which is held every year in India since 2002. He is also the Chairman of the 6th Indo-German Winter Academy to be held at IIT Guwahati during 13-19 December 2007.  All 7 IITs and a famous University of Germany are part of this Academy. During January 4-6, 2006, he organized the 18th National & 7th ISHMT-ASME Heat and Mass Transfer Conference that was the biggest conference organized in the related area in India since 1972.  During January 2-3, 2006, he also organized an International Workshop on Treatment of Thermal Radiation in Heat Transfer Problems.  Prof. Mishra is the Chairman of the 3rd All India Students’ Conference on Science and Spiritual Quest to be held at Tirupati during 22-23 December 2007.

Since 1992 (from his IIT Kanpur days), under the guidance of his spiritual master, Dr. T. D. Singh (Srila Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami), a well known authority on Vedanta and Science, Prof. Mishra has been working on the  synthesis of science and spirituality for a harmonious society.
