Scientific Temper and the Search for the Origin of Life: Learning from Intellectual Interactions

Prof. Paul C. Lauterbur (1929-2007) was a Nobel-winning Chemist from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It is due to his pathbreaking innovation to introduce gradients in the magnetic field that we are able to use MRI to obtain images of internal body structures. It is a non-invasive method for medical diagnosis which resulted in reduced suffering for innumerable patients worldwide. Following is a conversation between Prof. Paul C. Lauterbur and Dr. T. D. Singh, Founder Director of Bhaktivedanta Institute and Founder of Vedanta and Science Educational Research Foundation, Kolkata, India, held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, on April 21, 2004.

Life Comes from Life, Part III B: A Study of Western Philosophies on Consciousness, Matter, Mind, and Reality from a Scientific Viewpoint

Prof. Jagadish N. Srivastava

This paper is in the series “Life Comes from Life,” being written by the author on Consciousness and the Foundations of Reality. In parts I and II, the ground work of a new and original theory by the author, denoted by TK, is laid, and it is heuristically shown that Consciousness is related to the Void, and is independent of time and space. The concept of Direct Perception (often called ‘intuition’ or ‘instinct’) is delineated. The nature of Reality is discussed in the light of TK. In paper IIIa, we argue that this theory offers a paradigm for Quantum Reality (i.e., Quantum Mechanics, and the behavior of the smallest known particles) that is more satisfactory than the others available. In this paper we try to show that there is a relatively large intersection between TK and the views of many of the greatest philosophers, and this is happening because of Direct Perception.
